It’s here. The new interface has been released, along with a host of new features that make the site more an app than website, which to me, is a very good thing for twitter, it’s users and future advertisers. So, what’s new? Well, pretty much everything…

The first thing you’ll notice is the new right hand panel, it’s been opened up and provides more of pretty much everything you had, but also forms the base of the most exciting new feature, expanded tweets, that slide out over the right hand side when you click on a tweet in the timeline. The expanded tweets allow you to view rich content on site, so you no longer have to click out to see YouTube videos, Flickr Images .etc The expanded tweets also pulls in related content around that particular tweet (much like some of the best web apps have been), showing geo-data, @replies, recent tweets, related tweets and much more.

There are also lots of great little features that you’ll discover over the coming days, with things like keyboard shortcuts to refresh the stream, create new tweets (in a light-box!) or direct messages. Even the tweet landing pages have been given a huge makeover, and now incorporate things like geo-data and rich content.

Overall, the new interface feels like a great iPad app, a little bit fun with lots of features to explore… This is the biggest leap forward for twitter since they launched, and seeing that 78% of their unique visits are on, it was hugely important that they created something rich enough to empower twitter’s browser users, but even more so to ensure that they keep those users online for advertisers to serve future impressions to!
