I’m not sure I can pack much more Augmented Reality into a single week of posts on Digital Buzz, but here goes! Starbucks are about to release a new app to activate unique Augmented Reality experiences triggered by their famous red xmas cups. The idea is to find, activate and share all 5 special xmas characters that appear randomly on the red cups.
The new app also happens to showcase special offers and provides an eGifting facility. While this might not be ground breaking AR, it will bring a huge mainstream following, so I’m really looking forward to seeing how many people download the app and trigger the AR experiences… It has the potential to clear the path for all sorts of future AR campaigns if this can get some solid traction!
Judging from the comments left on YouTube maybe it won’t fly. Then again could be just bitter competitors…
I love this application – there is something nice about a Christmas augmented app although I suppose it has a limited shelf life which will be the next 8 weeks but I still like it.
Great blog by the way – I have been reading it for years and this is my first comment. Shame on me.

I applaud the attempt, but it leaves me a bit flat. interactivity appears pretty limited. I could see that it helps kill a bit of time for the individual, but I can’t see the point of sharing. Too much other superior content out there to spend time with.
