Here is an interesting take on alternate reality campaigns. For the launch of the latest Tom Clancy game, Splinter Cell Conviction, UBISOFT teamed up with Layar to create the worlds first AR game on the popular Augmented Reality iPhone platform called Layar.
The game challenged players (and the media) to follow clues that were delivered as messages, sound recordings, QR codes, Augmented Reality overlays, posters, maps and even actors.
I’m not sold on this campaign as a whole, no doubt it’s seriously cool, hugely detailed and a rewarding experience for game fans, but it seems to be lacking that “wow” factor needed, something different, particularly because alternate reality games have become commonplace for high-end gaming launches. Perhaps its just that really bad demo video, or is it just me?!
