is twitter to be considered as a real search engine
There is a great post over on TechCrunch about why Twitter should be considered a search engine. But it’s just micro blogging, i hear you say right? Who cares about the useless spam running through twitter on a daily basis? Well… it’s not… It’s possibly the most valuable information there is online, because of twitters character limit and posting speed, it attracts thought provoking comments, short sharp posts, news alerts, a huge amount of personal opinion on brands, products, services and even people – all this, live from anywhere it’s users may be, and that means twitter essentially has a world wide community of instant reporters working for free to provide data like no other!

This is, perhaps, digital gold for Twitter, who’ve been working on their monetisation strategy which is yet to be implemented, so using this ridiculously powerful (personal, opinionated data) might just be the way forward to monetise this social media platform to heights unseen through any online service so far.

Would love to hear your thoughts on the post, you can check it out here.

I think it has the potential, it just probably depends on what you are searching for. Opinions = yes. Ability to search on context = not always so good. Here’s what I think would be the killer app. Mash together Twitter and Google.

  2. Warren Sukernek Says:

Search is definitely the big focus for Twitter. Twitter’s real time conversational search is extremely valuable and I feel is where we will see its monetization. Once the installed base soon grows to a certain level, I think we will see all kinds of interesting revenue plans.

I appreciate your idea Michele. The mashup idea will be really good then i think it will be so easier for a shopper to search the product and opinions of people together. It will make the entire experience such a breeze.

Nice article Aden, Thanks for sharing.

Warren, couldn’t agree more, I can’t wait to see what their platform will deliver to advertisers, the potential of such highly targeted campaigns leveraging real time conversation will provide a platform even google can’t compete with!

  5. Louis Venter Says:

Im with Michelle on this one, IMO Twitter will certainly will provide a good additional search to vett a company or product but wont be as relevant when finding that product or service.

I feel that the practise of tweeting to your followers about their experiences delivers a more relevant picture, perhaps a search feature that Twitter could add?

Definitely agree about the mashup idea, relevancy and peer review all rolled in to one, a potent trust generating combination!
