I know there are a few apps like this out there, but I’m surprised there hasn’t been many more developed around the world, it’s the perfect tour device and with iPhone penetration and the low cost of purchase for say, iPod touches, Museums (and indeed even cities) could easily rent them out for tourists (the History Museum has 350 ready to go).
The Museum of National History’s new iPhone app that acts as your personal tour guide (or you can create your own) with detailed information on over 140 displays, hall by hall, with all the exhibits, theaters, restrooms and cafes at your finger tips, and comes complete with an interactive GPS enabled map add that extra bit of help. The app was funded by Bloomberg and runs through a local WiFi connection (not sure why?)

Awesome! Imagine if they integrated it with some AR so that when you pointed the phone/pod at a dinosaur skeleton it came to life as a 3D model.
I believe using WIFI(and doing regression from various routers to get your current location within the museum) is to get a better and more accurate location for the LBS.
Using 3G would be using the cell towers, and it not likely to use GPS indoors. Hence the best way out is to use wifi instead.
Right – of course, great answer Jack
Makes perfect sense on that…
Cool!
Great!
