I don’t think this type of trend will take off, but I’m sure there would be a few interesting uses around for it away from the big screen (possibly for use in online campaigns, museums experiences and the like). Either way, it’s a pretty cool concept that would definitely capture some engagement and certainly has been creating some buzz online since being released. What do you think?
Sorry, this was done 15 years ago in colleges across the globe in Interactive Design 101. Note that there are always only 2 choices allowed – it’s false to say the audience changes the story, they only direct the story along a series of pre-determined routes, picking which route at pre-established control points. It’s similar to old-school Role-Playing Games on consoles where you pick what path your character goes down.
Now if it actually created the movie in real-time (using 3-D rendered characters, etc.), then it would be an innovative idea.
As it stands, its a rehash and repackaging of Interactive Design 101 and will be a flash in the pants trend, if that.
Hey Saigon Design,
I couldn’t agree more! Thanks for your comments
I wrote in January 2009 about interactive movies in my blog. I think the idea is great, but I would add something more. A SMS voting system. This would make it more tempting for cinemas. You could also use the interactive idea it to concerts and live events too. Please read more from http://timojappinen.wordpress.com/2009/01/05/interactive-movies/
Best,
Timo
