Posting this one for the Archives as it’s a little dated but I’ve wanted to post for a long while! This piece of work from MIT’s Tangible Media Group, who’ve invented a surface that three-dimensionally changes shape, allowing users to not only interact with digital content in meatspace, but even hold hands with a person hundreds of miles away.
From here, you can only imagine what can be created as technology gets smaller and more precise. Fully haptic/tactile interaction perhaps? This whole piece is powered by a laptop and a hacked Microsoft Kinect, plus a fancy motorised pin-screen type surface.
