This could be one of the reasons why Nokia Ovi have not experienced such success even though it started earlier than Apple's.

Intresting but not surprising, I think what moved the Apple App store to success is that iPhone users buy with a perception that it is more than just a mobile, indeed iPhone users are more inclined to downalod applications and customize their devices than those who use even the Nokia “martest” phones. I did the math based on the numbers given, that's over 28,000 developers competing for 175 Million in revenue in December. That's less than 7k per developer monthly, and that assumes that the avg. developer has 5 apps. There is a chance for success, but it can be hit or miss, particularly with the wrong idea, so don't go smashing a piggy bank if you're not a developer. Sites like ours let user submit their own ideas for free, and let users vote on which ideas get built. If your idea gets picked, you get $1,000 and a share of the profits. Probably not going to retire on it, but a good alternative for a user with a good idea.

Very interesting stuff, but don’t know if it reinforces the author’s contention that these are convincing stats to spend cash to turn those app ideas into reality. This would then actually help a developer learn about some of the things they should be aware of when submitting an app in order to increase the chances of their app getting accepted.

Really nice infographic, the one piece of info that I’d like to see included is the amount of app’s submitted (must be a huge number) and how many get rejected by Apple for bogus and non-bogus reasons (like an app that competes with AT&T for example).
