This has to be one of the best Augmented Reality Experience I’ve seen, created by Y&R Chicago for Hotels.com, this Augmented Reality website called Virtual Vacay is actually pretty useful and somewhat educational over the promotional type AR experiences that are gaining traction.
It allows you to experience various US cities in the palm of your hands, and also gives you microphone interactivity, real-time data feeds, local events information and a personal tour guide among many other great features and interactive experiences (like making personal AR post cards to send to friends)! Click here to check out Virtual Vacay.
It’s a very impressive production, but I’m not sure how much value the AR element adds. Holding aloft an iPhone or piece of paper for the 15-20mins of interaction time gets tiring.
There have been enough Papervision sites over the past 3 years for users to be comfortable with navigating in 3D without having to twist and angle an iPhone to interact.
I agree the microphone/camera integration is impressive, the interactivity (renaming hollywood sign etc) is all very cute & engaging and there’s great content to learn about the cities … but, really, the AR-as-interface-as-gimmick hasn’t added a significant value to the project, beyond making it PR-worthy.
Hi!
Heh U probably are not gonna believe me but I was thinking the same thing great AR but is it good enough that I forget how tiring holding up a paper etc is for even a medium length of time?
That’s the only negative in this great tailor made campaign which is high on value and relevance.
Thanks Aden u rock!
