Just over a year ago Google released an app for iPhone that did away with needing a keyboard for searching by using speech recognition. Now Google has come out with an amazing implementation of image recognition and augmented reality technology for their own Android platform that uses the camera, compass and GPS on compatible smartphones as inputs for searching the net. As seen in this demonstration, this new visual search app “Google Goggles” gives you the ability to search the internet for information on the world around you without having to type a single word! The app is out now, and is free to download on the Android Market.

Google seems to be doing a good job of becoming what AOL… sorry Aol. was during the beginning of the internet boom, only better. I look forward to seeing what sort of advances this progressive company will continue to release.

Best of all, even though Google may be growing, I never get the mogul heebie-jeebies that I do from Aol., Time Warner, Microsoft, or any of the others.

The cool thing here is that it’s going to reduce the searching costs. A potential consumer doesn’t even need to search for Special K deals to actually find the promotions. I think the great thing here is that AR could superimpose that added, relevant info without the consumer committing to an actual demonstration of volition: you know, actually clicking “I feel lucky.”

    -cheers, good find!-
