Here is a really cool project initiated by General Motors, called the “Windows of Opportunity” project that challenged the FutureLAB at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Israel to make back seat windows interactive for kids…
The challenge was designed around a transparent digital display window, and the students worked with the General Motors Human-Machine Interface Group to explore the possibilities of the future. With the outcome being an entertainment centre built around apps to deliver gaming, information and creative expression for kids. Very very cool – it’s probably 10 years off I’m sure. But I can’t wait.

Cool project. Very nice of GM to initialize something like this.
I do think the results are pretty poor though. None of the examples actually ‘augment’ on the reality outside. The window is just used as a stand alone display. Think about what you can do with GPS on the car and a compass (standard ipad stuff) The window could display all kinds of information of what you’re actually looking at outside. It could tell me where I was going and how long there still was to go if it was hooked up to my navigation as well. Much more possibilities and far more useful.

I’m not dissing this, It’s a nice concept. BUT… Have you considered the effects on posture and Left-side / Right-side muscle balance? Right away, I’m thinking: Neck, Shoulder, Back problems. Kids will be off to the Chiropractor and Physio every other week.

Toyota is experimenting with similar technology, maybe it’s not so far off into the future?
