This is an interesting way to launch what Google, Motorola & Verizon are hoping to be the iPhone Killer. A home made animation (with an ‘ok’ sound track) that clearly ticks off all the things that an iPhone Doesn’t do, before ending with a weird digital static transition & web address.
It’s a massive stab at the current iPhone. But it’s all true. All things you wish the iPhone did.
It then takes you to a registration page with no more information. This video has cranked up more than 600,000 views on YouTube since it’s launch 3 days ago. The Verizon seeders are doing an amazing job! And it’s even got me interested to see what’s coming. It’s been rumored for a while, but this is the first material to come out for the phone.
This is what my alert confirmation email says: “You don’t need a smartphone, you need a supergenius in your pocket. A phone that listens better than the person on the other end of the call. Apps of every shape and size. Emails that let you know what they are before you read them. The greatest web experience on a phone. All working together to get things done. You know there’s no phone like that. And it ticks you off. But there will be. Droid is coming.”
I guess we’ll hear something more in the coming weeks on the new Droid Phone. But the campaign is pretty bold to start, so it will be interesting to see what they do with the real launch and ongoing advertising… Attack the iPhone or establish superiority? I’m now betting on both!
Hey Motorola, Verizon…if you live in “Windows”, I would suggest not
throwing stones, because Apple, iphone, ipod, itunes, along with Google,
can and will, have the last laugh….
Secret? It’s about simplicity and ease of use…and building a good
product that lasts…. Windows will never be cool
Hey Aden
saw the ad last night here in San diego. Overheard the person next to me ask who is this ad for? His friend replied “it’s for the iPhone”. Bit of a concern for verison. Wouldn’t be surprised if apple comes out with an “idont care” ad.
Just the viral makes me want one and if its more stable than my HTC im in.
It does give me the ‘irrits’ that there isn’t an interchangeable battery due to it’s terrible battery life, and the camera on it is a joke.

Not nearly as compelling as Verizon’s “there’s a map for that” anti-AT&T/iPhone ad that extolls Verizon’s far larger 3G network. But as an avid iPhone user, this Droid teaser ad matters not. iDon’t care… and iWonder if Droid will sync up with a Mac?
Did anyone else notice that the trademark of “DROID” in the video is attributed to Lucasfilm?
I wonder what their involvement is…
TO David Kramer – Google created android.
either way — it would be nice for iphone to have some healthy competition. i’m slightly bothered by their reign. but dont get my wrong i love apple.

I don’t think it will have any major impact, the iPhone is already well established and it is as David said, simplicity and ease of use. The iPhone is already highly extendable through the use of thousands of applications that can be used for anything and everything. This contender won’t stand a chance, they might sell it to some unsuspecting nerds, but come on. As for running more than one application at a time, that seems a bit too much for something with a 3 and half inch screen, I know I wouldn’t want to be dealing with the complexity of running a bunch of apps on a phone at the same time, I really don’t need to do that. Besides I can still run google maps and listen to tunes at the same time, plus take phone calls so what more do you want from your phone?
