You may have caught this during the Australian Open over the last week or so, it’s the official iPad app program guide. And as far as I can tell, it might just be the first of its kind out there for a major international tennis event. Feel free to correct me here!
The iPad App replicated the full 80 odd page tournament program guide and then threw in a few of the cool things you’d be expecting from a grand slam event app, like live news, live scores, plus player, celebrity and fan tweets, game schedules, current weather updates, ticketing information, foursquare check-ins and video highlights updated all day long through the a pretty cool looking data driven dashboard that was seemingly endless as you scrolled. Along with a pretty cool autograph scrapbook for players to sign.
They also had a feature called “Tournament Talk” which was a visualisation of all the live tweets as they came in, that you could follow on the iPad app while also checking it out across the event where it was streamed to a number of big screens. Created by the guys at Ogilvy Sydney and IBM.

That’s a great app. Will it work on an iPhone and will there be one for Wimbledon and the other Slams?

It’s a great i-pad app but as nice as it is i think they could have done the basic social piece around the Australian Open a whole lot better.
For example a live streaming of the two finals either on the channel 7 website or the Australian open facebook page in conjunction with channel 7 would have been great. This could have been integrated with a twitter feed for a real time engagement.
As it was last night there was a live feed on the channel 7 website but it would had a whole lot more context with a live stream occurring in tandem.
I think we are at the point in this country where making live streams of live events available will help bridge the gap between what is going on in the various social channels, online platforms and TV to help build a more immersive experience for all. This then can be integrated into the other mobile devices and applications so that the whole experience is a lot more integrated across each platform. A the moment I think there is a real opportunity to engage with tennis fans on an ongoing basis being missed by not concentrating on the basics around how you engage effectively with the core Audience.
